West Bengal, known for its cultural heritage, has embraced progress through two transformative initiatives launched by the Directorate of MSME in August 2023: ‘The Artisan Enlistment Portal and Artisan Card’ Project, and the ‘Green Firecracker Licensing Module’. These projects integrate tradition with technology and champion sustainability.

The Artisan Enlistment Portal and Artisan Card Project addresses challenges faced by the sector, such as limited market access and lack of recognition. By providing a digital platform for registration, issuing unique IDs and showcasing artisan products globally, the initiative has empowered over 45,000 artisans and 61,000 weavers, fostering inclusivity for marginalised groups like women and minorities. Awareness programmes like Shilper Samadhane and offline registration options ensure accessibility, creating a robust database for policymaking and preserving traditional crafts.

The Green Firecracker Licensing Module, launched within the Silpasathi portal, streamlines licensing for the unorganised firecracker industry, promoting environmental and safety standards. Key features include QR-coded licenses, joint inspections and adoption of eco-friendly NEERI-certified technologies. The module has formalised over 1,500 manufacturers and sellers, improving worker conditions and public health while reducing noise and air pollution.

Both initiatives reflect West Bengal’s dedication to empowering its people, preserving cultural heritage and fostering environmental responsibility, setting a benchmark for sustainable and inclusive development globally.
