Application for Crowd Monitoring and Management

The Department of Information Technology, Electronics, and Communications (ITE&C) developed the Crowd Monitoring and Management Application using AI. This programme used real-time camera feed and delivered dynamic statistics through a dashboard. It covered the entire premises or selected locations/areas based on the camera feed.

Problem:

Prior to the application’s implementation, a system to monitor crowds and prevent overcrowding in estimated regions and places was required. There was no method in place to measure crowd density and warn the forces for traffic control decisions. More preparation was required for the necessary provisions for the anticipated crowd, as well as enhanced visibility was needed for public meetings and other activities.

Solutions:

The application was designed to use a real time camera feed to provide dynamic analytics with a dashboard.  The camera feed provided coverage of entire premises or specific locations. The application was used to send notifications to police in order for them to make required preparations for expected crowds. Departments such as the Police, Fire, Water Works, Transportation, Power, and Municipality worked together to offer safety and critical arrangements depending on the application.

Outcomes:

The project’s implementation resulted in the avoidance of overcrowding and stampede scenarios. There was provision for safety precautions through collaboration of many departments, and police took necessary actions and safeguarded visitors. The coverage of this application included around 1-2 lakh people.

Challenges:

The key hurdles in the project were network and connection issues, as well as power supply concerns and camera downtime.

Innovation:

The project’s novel components included the use of AI and facial recognition technologies, as well as the supply of criminal identification if criminal databases were provided.

Opportunities:

The project’s prospects included implementation in crowd gathering places such as events, bus and train terminals, public events, and festival rallies.

Summary:

The Crowd management and monitoring application used real-time camera feed and gave dynamic statistics through a dashboard. The camera feed covered the entire premises or selected locations/areas. It aided in preventing overpopulation and traffic management in the predicted region. It was also used to measure density and notify forces to make decisions. There was more visibility on public gatherings and activities so as to plan for necessary arrangements for the estimated crowd.
