In September 2018 Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose Jharkhand’s capital Ranchi to launch the flagship healthcare programme Ayushman Bharat. It shows the focus on inclusiveness of the initiative. While Jharkhand is endowed with rich mineral resource the state remain laggard on major socio-economic indicators. But the things have started looking better.

In the 2019 SKOCH State of Governance ranking Jharkhand is categorised as a Catching Up state on the back of a number of commendable initiatives in the areas of district administration, municipality, police and governance.

From ODF to ODF sustainability

Governments and institutions across the country have put their best foot forward to achieve the Open Defecation Free (ODF) target in the recent years. While it has been achieved by and large, sustainability is a big challenge. Ramgarh district administration has made a concerted effort to ensure sustainability of ODF. It has adopted convergence model wherein all departments have come forward and an action plan was developed to generate awareness among community for driving district from ODF to ODF sustainability and ODF+ activities. Ramgarh district was pioneer in state sanitation drive with lots of innovative activities like Swachhta voting, roadmap for ODF and ODF sustainability, colour coded sticker for monitoring, mobile based monitoring system for ODF sustainability activities and different community awareness approaches by creating multi-stakeholder engagement strategy.

Entrepreneur Development through Stitching

With a view to improve livelihood among poor, Dhanbad district administration has taken initiatives to promote entrepreneurship through stitching. Under this initiative community production centre has been set up for facilitating stitching of school uniform and shoes. It is run mostly by SHG entrepreneurs.

Jharkhand’s State Drugs Control Directorate has taken initiatives to automate its workflow for regulating manufacturing of drugs and cosmetics with an objective to ease out the process for internal and external users and better monitoring.

Special Investigation and Prosecution Unit

Jharkhand Police has set up special investigation and prosecution unit. It seeks to ensure better coordination and ensure accountability and transparency in the system.
