Mumbai, a bustling city of dreams, is marked by stark socio-economic divides, with nearly half its population living in slums. These marginalised communities often struggle with housing and financial stability, particularly during rehabilitation projects. A major challenge has been the cumbersome and opaque process of receiving rent payments from developers, which has historically pushed many slum dwellers into financial insecurity.
In May 2024, the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), Brihanmumbai introduced the Rent Management System to address these issues. This digital platform streamlines the rent complaint process, enabling slum dwellers to log grievances, track their application status and receive updates on hearing schedules via an accessible online dashboard.It also enhances administrative efficiency for SRA officials and enforces accountability among developers.
The system’s impact has been profound. Monthly visitor numbers at SRA offices have decreased by over 65%, rent collections have risen from ₹58 crore to ₹75 crore, and case hearings have reduced from 2,000 to 460 per month, all contributing to improved law and order.
Despite initial resistance to the digital shift, targeted awareness campaigns facilitated smooth adoption.
