Making Life Better Through Technology

Chandigarh, India’s first planned city, has used modern technology extensively and efficiently to improve living standards. It has one of the highest per capita income and among the cleanest cities in India. Chandigarh is a Performer in this year’s SKOCH Governance study.

It has one of the highest per capita income and among the cleanest cities in India. Chandigarh is a Performer in this year’s SKOCH Governance study. The Union Territory, that serves as capital city of two states—Punjab and Haryana, won 7 SKOCH Orders-of-Merit and 1 SKOCH Governance Award in Silver category.

Chandigarh is on top in terms of Human Development Index. People of Chandigarh are among the wealthiest in the country. Per Capita income of Chandigarh rose to Rs 1,56,951 in the fiscal 2013-14. This is the second highest after the National Capital Territory Delhi.

Key Achievements

Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has implemented several innovative projects to make the city cleaner and better for living. The Corporation has started an initiative for maintenance of public parks with public participation. Under this initiative, the Corporation involves community at large in the maintenance of the park. This has resulted in better upkeep and improving citizen satisfaction.

For better management of the city and to ensure cleanliness and smooth traffic, the Corporation has implemented Street Vending Plan. As a part of this scheme, the vendors in the city are to be registered and then issued license to carry out their business. The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh proposes to conduct this survey of street vendors making it online and completely paperless. Chandigarh Street Vending Plan is a prominent project for the welfare of urban street vendors under Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation) Act, 2014.

To ensure speedy removal/transportation of sold waste from the city, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has extensively used IT in Solid Waste Management. Online Bin Tracking System has been started for monitoring the lifting of garbage bins in a time bound manner from different locations in the city. Unique Identification Number (UIN) has been provided to all the bins, locations, drivers and vehicles. Every vehicle has been mapped with the location assigned to it. This helps in proper and effective monitoring; and, seamless implementation.

With an objective to improve efficiency and ensure quality patient-care, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has computerised all its activities. The Institute has created a state-of-the-art IT infrastructure for implementation of Hospital Information System. The Institute has improved hospital utilisation by use of Information technology as a management tool. It is also promoting eye donation through a scientifically managed Hospital Cornea Retrieval Programme.
